9½ Weeks

9½ Weeks is an erotic drama film directed by Adrian Lyne and starring Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke. It is based on the memoir of the same name by Elizabeth McNeill. The film was completed in 1984 but not released until February 1986.

The film was not a major success commercially in the United States, grossing only $7 million at the box office from a $17 million budget. In addition, it received mixed reviews. However the film acquired a large fanbase on video and was a huge success internationally, making $100 million worldwide. The film's content is often labelled as S+M, but except for one scene, physical pain is not administered. It is more accurate to note that the relationship between John and Elizabeth closely resembles D/s throughout the movie. The male character derives sexual pleasure from assuming a dominant role in sex and life, while the female character is new to such an arrangement and is exploring its nature and whether she enjoys it.

The film spawned two direct-to-video sequels, Another 9½ Weeks (1997) and The First 9½ Weeks (1998).
