Conservation Efforts
The Pusat Latihan Gajah (Centre for Elephant Training) at Saree (PLG-Saree), was set up in 1994 within the Cut Nyak Dien Forest park, about 70 kilometers from Banda Aceh. The park has 6,300 hectares at the foot of Mount Seulawah under the protection of the provincial forestry and plantations office. As of May 2011, there were 48 elephants trained by 45 mahot (instructors). Each elephant has its own handler or instructor. Elephants are meek rather than aggressive except when they feel threatened. The trained elephants tend to have fewer conflicts with local communities (over such matters as trampling farm crops) than wild elephants.

Famous quotes containing the words conservation and/or efforts:
“The putting into force of laws which shall secure the conservation of our resources, as far as they may be within the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, including the more important work of saving and restoring our forests and the great improvement of waterways, are all proper government functions which must involve large expenditure if properly performed.”
—William Howard Taft (18571930)
“It could be clearly proved that by a practical nullification [by the South] of the Fifteenth Amendment the Republicans have for several years been deprived of a majority in both the House and Senate. The failure of the South to faithfully observe the Fifteenth Amendment is the cause of the failure of all efforts towards complete pacification. It is on this hook that the bloody shirt now hangs.”
—Rutherford Birchard Hayes (18221893)
