Derivative Forms
A new wave of bands, that used intense aggression and machismo, emerged in 1993 and 1994. This new sound, called nu metal, was influenced largely by alternative metal acts such as Rage Against the Machine, Tool, Helmet, Nine inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, Primus, White Zombie and Faith No More, while also drawing influence from other genres such as hip hop and the groove metal of Pantera. Nu metal combines the aggressive riffs of Korn, the acoustic ballads of Staind, and the rapping of Limp Bizkit. Korn's demo Neidermeyer's Mind, released in 1993, is considered the first nu metal album. By the latter 1990s, nu metal bands were playing a combination of thrash metal, hip hop, industrial, hardcore punk and grunge. Other fusions of alternative metal have emerged, such as post-grunge which combines the heavy riffs of alternative metal with grunge and other genres such as jangle pop, pop punk and ska.
