Twin Cities
Birmingham has six twin cities, which Birmingham City Council refers to as "international partner cities";
- Chicago, United States (Since 1993);
- Frankfurt am Main, Germany (Since 1966);
- Johannesburg, South Africa (Since 1997);
- Leipzig, Germany (Since 1992);
- Lyon, France (Since 1951);
- Milan, Italy.
There are also Treaties of Friendship between Birmingham and Guangzhou in China, and between Birmingham and Mirpur in Azad Kashmir from where about 90,000 Birmingham citizens originate. Birmingham, Alabama, USA, is named after the city and shares an industrial kinship.

Famous quotes containing the words twin and/or cities:
“That Dali is really Norman Rockwells twin brother kidnapped by gypsies in babyhood.”
—Vladimir Nabokov (18991977)
“Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land,
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.”
—Emma Lazarus (18491887)
