Toponymy
There are several possible origins for the name of the city and the name is similar to the Spanish city of Burgos. When the city was founded, the inhabitants of the surrounding country got into the fortified village, named "pyrgos" (Greek: Πύργος) or burgos, meaning "tower" or "fortress" (→ Burgus). By another theory, the city's name comes from Latin, or a Gothic name meaning signified consolidated walled villages (Gothic baurgs).
