The Bible uses the Hebrew word ben ("son") about ten times as often as bat ("daughter"). In the Bible, a girl's father had the right to sell or give his daughter's hand in marriage. Once married off, authority over the girl passed to her new husband, who was called ba'al ("husband/master").
