Deborah Tannen - Research

Research

Deborah Tannen's research began when she analyzed a dinner conversation with her friends, while working on her Ph.D. Tannen's focus is on the expression of interpersonal relationships. This illustration on relationships is related to gender in both home and work life. Tannen works with 'dual-culture' tradition. This tradition argues that men and women speak differently because they are from different cultures. Gender-specific communication styles come from boys and girls playing in same-sex groups when growing up. This results in men and women having trouble communicating with the opposite sex later in life. Deborah Tannen has done extensive research on this topic; however, feminist linguists argue against Tannen's claims.

Famous quotes containing the word research:

It is a good morning exercise for a research scientist to discard a pet hypothesis every day before breakfast. It keeps him young.
    Konrad Lorenz (1903–1989)

If politics is the art of the possible, research is surely the art of the soluble. Both are immensely practical-minded affairs.
    Peter B. Medawar (1915–1987)

Feeling that you have to be the perfect parent places a tremendous and completely unnecessary burden on you. If we’ve learned anything from the past half-century’s research on child development, it’s that children are remarkably resilient. You can make lots of mistakes and still wind up with great kids.
    Lawrence Kutner (20th century)
