Epidemiology
Duchenne muscular dystrophy is caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene, which is located on the X chromosome. DMD has an incidence of 1 in 4,000 newborn males. Mutations within the dystrophin gene can either be inherited or occur spontaneously during germline transmission.
