Military Service
In 1942, Wood enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, just months after the Attack on Pearl Harbor. According to World War II USMC Rosters, Wood was assigned the service number 388475. He was assigned to the 6th and 7th Defense Battalions, and reached the rank of Corporal before he was discharged. Wood claimed that he had participated in the Battle of Guadalcanal while secretly wearing a brassiere and panties beneath his uniform.
