Handicrafts As A School Subject
In the Nordic countries handicrafts is a compulsory school subject, sloyd (in Swedish) and veisto or nowadays käsityö (in Finnish), where students learn how to work with mainly metal, textile and wood. Not for vocational purposes but in the aim to develop children's practical skills and general practical abilities such as problemsolving in the every day life, handtoolmanaging and handeling of the materials that surrounds us for economical, cultural and environmental purposes.
