Ambient Noise Reduction
Interference from external sound can be reduced either by active noise cancellation, or by attenuating noise getting into the ear. The two headphone types that do this attenuation best are in-ear canal headphones and closed-back headphones (both circumaural and supra aural). Open-back and earbud headphones provide some noise isolation as well, but to a much lesser extent than the closed-back and in-ear. Typically closed-back headphones block 8 to 12 dB and in-ears anywhere from 10 to 15 dB.

“You have to make more noise than anybody else, you have to make yourself more obtrusive than anybody else, you have to fill all the papers more than anybody else, in fact you have to be there all the time and see that they do not snow you under, if you are really going to get your reform realized.”
—Emmeline Pankhurst (18581928)
“The reduction of nuclear arsenals and the removal of the threat of worldwide nuclear destruction is a measure, in my judgment, of the power and strength of a great nation.”
