Cloning Hopes
The discovery of well-preserved woolly mammoth remains in eastern Siberia in 2012 raised distant hopes that the animal could be cloned. A Russian-led team of international scientists found intact cells among remains including hair and bone marrow. In theory, the animal – which died out between 10,000 and 4,000 years ago – could be recreated if living cells are discovered.
More recently, scientists at the University of Manitoba have successfully recreated woolly mammoth hemoglobin; the resulting samples are akin to drawing hemoglobin directly from a living specimen.
