The Methods of Philosophy
Most sources agree that the chief method of philosophy is logical, rational, critical enquiry and argument "of a more or less systematic kind." Thomistic philosophers refer similarly to the "natural light of reason".
Stephen Toulmin defines three basic approaches to philosophy:
- the philosopher as geometer: centers on formal inquiry; thinkers from Plato to Frege.
- the philosopher as anthropologist: tries to find the basics of human nature; thinkers such as David Hume and Adam Smith.
- the philosopher as critic: investigates the a priori conditions on which e.g. knowledge can exist; Immanuel Kant.

Famous quotes containing the words methods and/or philosophy:
“With a generous endowment of motherhood provided by legislation, with all laws against voluntary motherhood and education in its methods repealed, with the feminist ideal of education accepted in home and school, and with all special barriers removed in every field of human activity, there is no reason why woman should not become almost a human thing. It will be time enough then to consider whether she has a soul.”
—Crystal Eastman (18811928)
“The great critic ... must be a philosopher, for from philosophy he will learn serenity, impartiality, and the transitoriness of human things.”
—W. Somerset Maugham (18741965)
