Micah

Micah ( /ˈmaɪkə/; Hebrew: מִיכָה, Mikha Mîḵā) is a given name.

Micah is the name of several people in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), and means "who is like God?". The name is sometimes found with theophoric extensions. Suffix theophory in Yah and in Yahweh results in Michaiah or Michaihu (Hebrew: מִיכָיְהוּ, Mikhayhu Mîḵā́yhû), meaning who is like Yahweh? Suffix theophory in El results in Michael (Hebrew: מִיכָאֵל, Mikha'el Mîḵāʼēl), meaning "who is like God?".

In Dutch, Micah is spelled Micha and the ch in the name is pronounced either or ; the first is more common in female names, the latter in male names. The name is not as common as Michael or Michiel.

Famous quotes containing the word micah:

Within us, the people of the United States, there is evident a serious and purposeful rekindling of confidence, and I join in the hope that when my time as your President has ended, people might say this about our Nation: That we had remembered the words of Micah and renewed our search for humility, mercy, and justice.
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)

They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
    Bible: Hebrew Isaiah, 2:4.

The words reappear in Micah 4:3, and the reverse injunction is made in Joel 3:10 (”Beat your plowshares into swords ...”)
