The usual method of reaching Sand Island, Midway Atoll's only populated island, is on chartered aircarft via Henderson Field Airport.
Henderson Field functions as an emergency diversion point runway for transpacific flights. On June 16, 2011, a Delta Air Lines 747 flying from Honolulu to Osaka, Japan with 380 passengers and crew made an emergency landing at Henderson Field. On August 2, 2012 a U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18 fighter jet traveling from Honolulu to Iwakuni, Japan, made a precautionary landing on Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge after experiencing a mechanical problem.
