Famous quotes containing the word religious:
“Never for a moment have I had one doubt about my religious beliefs. There are people who believe only so far as they can understandthat seems to me presumptuous and sets their understanding as the standard of the universe.”

“It is a sign of our times, conspicuous to the coarsest observer, that many intelligent and religious persons withdraw themselves from the common labors and competitions of the market and the caucus, and betake themselves to a certain solitary and critical way of living, from which no solid fruit has yet appeared to justify their separation.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“Each religious sect has its own physiognomy. The Methodists have acquired a face; the Quakers, a face; the nuns, a face. An Englishman will pick out a dissenter by his manners.”
