Peter Shaffer - Personal Life

Personal Life

Shaffer, a highly private man who's extremely guarded his personal life when asked about it, has been married three times to three different women and has raised six children throughout his life. His first marriage was to actress and socialite, Loretta Newman, whom he met while at the University of Cambridge and became married to on July 11, 1947. The two had six children: Peter, Jr. (born 1948), Joseph (born 1949), Stephanie (born 1951), Charles (born 1952), Maria (born 1955) and Jessica (born 1956). Separating twice: first in 1963 and second in September of 1966, they divorced on October 12, 1966 after 19 years of marriage. Shaffer then married fellow writer, playwright and novelist, Josephine O'Neal whom he was married to for 10 years until divorcing in June of 1977. Since August 8, 1981, Shaffer has been married to painter and sculptor, Rachel Freeman whom he met right after his break away from O'Neal in 1977. Shaffer is an expert pilot who flies planes and helicopters regularly when travelling in a certain long distance trip and earned his flight license when he was nineteen in 1945. He currently lives in London and Bristol, England and has at least three country homes in the United States in Maine, Florida and California.

Famous quotes containing the words personal life, personal and/or life:

Wherever the State touches the personal life of the infant, the child, the youth, or the aged, helpless, defective in mind, body or moral nature, there the State enters “woman’s peculiar sphere,” her sphere of motherly succor and training, her sphere of sympathetic and self-sacrificing ministration to individual lives.
    Anna Garlin Spencer (1851–1931)

Most personal correspondence of today consists of letters the first half of which are given over to an indexed statement of why the writer hasn’t written before, followed by one paragraph of small talk, with the remainder devoted to reasons why it is imperative that the letter be brought to a close.
    Robert Benchley (1889–1945)

The hardest part about being a kid is knowing you have got your whole life ahead of you.
    Jane Wagner (b. 1935)
