Shaffer, a highly private man who's extremely guarded his personal life when asked about it, has been married three times to three different women and has raised six children throughout his life. His first marriage was to actress and socialite, Loretta Newman, whom he met while at the University of Cambridge and became married to on July 11, 1947. The two had six children: Peter, Jr. (born 1948), Joseph (born 1949), Stephanie (born 1951), Charles (born 1952), Maria (born 1955) and Jessica (born 1956). Separating twice: first in 1963 and second in September of 1966, they divorced on October 12, 1966 after 19 years of marriage. Shaffer then married fellow writer, playwright and novelist, Josephine O'Neal whom he was married to for 10 years until divorcing in June of 1977. Since August 8, 1981, Shaffer has been married to painter and sculptor, Rachel Freeman whom he met right after his break away from O'Neal in 1977. Shaffer is an expert pilot who flies planes and helicopters regularly when travelling in a certain long distance trip and earned his flight license when he was nineteen in 1945. He currently lives in London and Bristol, England and has at least three country homes in the United States in Maine, Florida and California.
