The next major version of Qt will be Qt 5. It was originally expected to be released in June 2012 but the release was delayed several times with the end of 2012 now being targeted. This new version will mark a major change in the platform, with hardware-accelerated graphics, QML and JavaScript playing a major role. The traditional C++-only QWidgets will continue to be supported, but will not benefit from the performance improvements available through the new architecture. Qt5 is expected to bring significant improvements to the speed and ease of developing user interfaces.
At the same time the framework has moved to open governance with development of Qt 5 taking place at qt-project.org. It is now possible for developers outside Nokia to submit patches and have them reviewed.
