Quad Cities

The Quad Cities is a group of five cities straddling the Mississippi River on the Iowa–Illinois boundary, in the United States. These cities, Davenport and Bettendorf (in Iowa) and Rock Island, Moline, and East Moline (in Illinois), are the center of the Quad Cities Metropolitan Area, which, as of 2011, had a population estimate of 381,342. The Quad Cities is midway between Minneapolis on the north and St. Louis on the south; Chicago on the east and Des Moines on the west. The area's 300-mile market of nearly 36.5 million people comprises around 12% of the nation's population. This makes it the largest 300-mile market west of Chicago.

The name "Quad Cities" for a group of five is based on the history of the community.

Famous quotes containing the word cities:

How far men go for the material of their houses! The inhabitants of the most civilized cities, in all ages, send into far, primitive forests, beyond the bounds of their civilization, where the moose and bear and savage dwell, for their pine boards for ordinary use. And, on the other hand, the savage soon receives from cities iron arrow-points, hatchets, and guns, to point his savageness with.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
