River Tees - Seal Sands

Seal Sands

Before the heavy pollution of the Tees by industry, the flats at Seal Sands in the estuary were home to Common Seals and Grey Seals. For around 10 years these species were absent from the estuary due to pollution. But recently water quality has improved dramatically, and the seals can once again be seen in the estuary and on the flats at Seal Sands. The Seal Sands area is now designated as the Teesmouth National Nature Reserve.

Famous quotes containing the words seal and/or sands:

Shut not so soon; the dull-eyed night
    Has not yet begun
To make a seizure on the light,
Or to seal up the sun.
    Robert Herrick (1591–1674)

Ye elves of hills, brooks, standing lakes, and groves,
And ye that on the sands with printless foot
Do chase the ebbing Neptune, and do fly him
When he comes back; you demi-puppets that
By moonshine do the green sour ringlets make,
Whereof the ewe not bites; and you whose pastime
    Is to make midnight mushrooms,
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
