The album was praised highly by critics.

In 1989, it was listed at number 48 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 greatest albums of the 1980s (despite having panned the album in a 1987 review). The staff at Pitchfork placed the album at 15 on their November 2002 list of the "Top 100 Albums of the 1980s"; Dominique Leone felt that Rundgren's production added warmth to the band's "clever-but-distant" songs. Slant Magazine listed the album at 67 on its list of "Best Albums of the 1980s".

Famous quotes containing the words critical and/or response:

Good critical writing is measured by the perception and evaluation of the subject; bad critical writing by the necessity of maintaining the professional standing of the critic.
    Raymond Chandler (1888–1959)

Eyes seeking the response of eyes
Bring out the stars, bring out the flowers,
    Thus concentrating earth and skies
So none need be afraid of size.
    All revelation has been ours.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)
