Level of Access
Everything in Smalltalk-80 is available for modification from within a running program. This means that, for example, the IDE can be changed in a running system without restarting it. In some implementations, the syntax of the language or the garbage collection implementation can also be changed on the fly. Even the statement true become: false
is valid in Smalltalk, although executing it is not recommended. When used judiciously, this level of flexibility allows for one of the shortest required times for new code to enter a production system.

Famous quotes containing the words level of, level and/or access:
“Architecture might be more sportive and varied if every man built his own house, but it would not be the art and science that we have made it; and while every woman prepares food for her own family, cooking can never rise beyond the level of the amateurs work.”
—Charlotte Perkins Gilman (18601935)
“A drawing is always dragged down to the level of its caption.”
—James Thurber (18941961)
“Oh, the holiness of always being the injured party. The historically oppressed can find not only sanctity but safety in the state of victimization. When access to a better life has been denied often enough, and successfully enough, one can use the rejection as an excuse to cease all efforts. After all, one reckons, they dont want me, they accept their own mediocrity and refuse my best, they dont deserve me.”
—Maya Angelou (b. 1928)
