State capitalism is distinguished from capitalist mixed economies where the state intervenes in markets in order to correct market failures or establish social regulations in the following way: in a state capitalist system, the state operates businesses for the purpose of accumulating capital and directing investment in the framework of either a free-market economy or a mixed-market economy. State and governmental functions are organized as corporations, companies or business enterprises.
