Swimming Career
Although Sun Yang had been swimming for several years, his international breakthrough happened at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Here, at the age of 16, he placed 28th in the 400 freestyle (3:50.90) and made the final in the 1500 freestyle and placed 8th with a time of 15:05.12. This was just beginning of his career, as the following year at the World Championships in Rome, he would go on to win his first international medal with a bronze in the 1500 freestyle with a time of 14:46.84. He also placed 18th in the 400 freestyle (3:47.51).
