Taoism - Political Aspects

Political Aspects

Unlike Confucianism, Taoism favors philosophical anarchism, pluralism and laissez-faire-government. According to Laozi, the best way to govern is not to govern (cf. wu-wei). He has been considered as one of the first classical liberals, as he wrote in the Daodejing: "The more prohibitions there are, the poorer the people become." Also Zhuangzi was along the same lines. On the other hand, politics never have been a main issue in Taoism.

Famous quotes containing the words political and/or aspects:

The war was won on both sides: by the Vietnamese on the ground, by the Americans in the electronic mental space. And if the one side won an ideological and political victory, the other made Apocalypse Now and that has gone right around the world.
    Jean Baudrillard (b. 1929)

I suppose an entire cabinet of shells would be an expression of the whole human mind; a Flora of the whole globe would be so likewise, or a history of beasts; or a painting of all the aspects of the clouds. Everything is significant.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
