Novgorod
In 1242, the Teutonic Knights invaded the Republic of Novgorod (located in modern-day Russia) but were defeated at Lake Peipus and pushed back by the forces of the prince and commanding general at Novgorod, Alexander Nevski. This battle is known in Russia as the Battle of the Ice, although correct translation from Russian would be "ice slaughter" (ледовое побоище).
