Triphenylphosphine - Preparation, Structure, Handling

Preparation, Structure, Handling

Triphenylphosphine is a relatively inexpensive substance. It can be prepared in the laboratory by treatment of phosphorus trichloride with phenylmagnesium bromide or phenyllithium. The industrial synthesis involves the reaction between phosphorus trichloride, chlorobenzene, and sodium. PPh3 is pyramidal with a chiral propeller-like arrangement of the three phenyl rings. The rigidity of PPh3 contributes to the ease with which its derivatives crystallize.

Famous quotes containing the word handling:

It is curious how instinctively one protects the image of oneself from idolatry or any other handling that could make it ridiculous, or too unlike the original to be believed any longer.
    Virginia Woolf (1882–1941)
