Netherlands
In the Netherlands, the term "university college" refers to special programmes at several universities which are similar to United States liberal arts colleges in providing a broad tertiary education; students at Dutch universities normally study one subject only. The first university college to be founded was University College Utrecht at the University of Utrecht (1998); since then, several others have followed. In the non-literal translation a college refers to the Dutch "Hoge School", which is an institute for non-university higher education. Unlike the university; which is more academic and theoretical in nature, the Hoge School focusses more on practical application of knowledge.
