Public Health Progress
Under President Jammeh, The Gambia has improved public health. In October 2012, it was reported that The Gambia has made significant improvements in polio, measles immunization, and the PCV-7 vaccine.
The Gambia was certified as polio-free in 2004. "The Gambia EPI program is one of the best in the WHO African Region, " Thomas Sukwa, a representative of the World Health Organization, said, according to the Foroyaa Newspaper. "It is indeed gratifying to note that the government of the Gambia remains committed to the global polio eradication initiative. "

Famous quotes containing the words public, health and/or progress:
“Consider any individual at any period of his life, and you will always find him preoccupied with fresh plans to increase his comfort. Do not talk to him about the interests and rights of the human race; that little private business of his for the moment absorbs all his thoughts, and he hopes that public disturbances can be put off to some other time.”
—Alexis de Tocqueville (18051859)
“I would hope that parents and grown children could be friends. When a friend confides in you that shes going to do something that you think is most inappropriate, foolhardy or even dangerous, wouldnt you as a friend say soin a calm, supportive way? Yet I have to be so careful what I say to my children. I have to walk on eggs to be sure Im not hurting their feelings or interfering with their lives.”
—Anonymous Parent of Adult Children. Ourselves and Our Children, by Boston Womens Health Book Collective, ch. 5 (1978)
“As men get on in life, they acquire a love for sincerity, and somewhat less solicitude to be lulled or amused. In the progress of the character, there is an increasing faith in the moral sentiment, and a decreasing faith in propositions.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
