Cruisers in Service Today
Few cruisers remain operational in the world navies. Those that do are:
- United States Navy: 22 Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruisers.
- Russian Navy: One Kirov-class large missile cruiser (sometimes referred to as battlecruisers due to their size) and three Slava-class missile cruisers and one Kara-class.
- Peruvian Navy: The BAP Almirante Grau (CLM-81), a De Zeven Provinciƫn-class cruiser, was modernized as a guided-missile cruiser in the late eighties, is the world's last operational gun cruiser.

Famous quotes containing the words service and/or today:
“In the early forties and fifties almost everybody had about enough to live on, and young ladies dressed well on a hundred dollars a year. The daughters of the richest man in Boston were dressed with scrupulous plainness, and the wife and mother owned one brocade, which did service for several years. Display was considered vulgar. Now, alas! only Queen Victoria dares to go shabby.”
—M. E. W. Sherwood (18261903)
“To be faced with what so-and-sos mother lets him do, or what the teacher said in class today or what all the kids are wearing is to be required to reexamine some part of our belief structure. Each time we rethink our values we reaffirm them or begin to change them. Seen in this way, parenthood affords us an exceptional opportunity for growth.”
—Ruth Davidson Bell (20th century)
