The term of Franconia (German: Franken) is today commonly used to refer to the eastern part of the historic Duchy of Franconia in Germany. The region is nowadays mainly represented by the administrative districts of Lower Franconia (Unterfranken, capital city Würzburg), Middle Franconia (Mittelfranken, capital city Ansbach), and Upper Franconia (Oberfranken, capital city Bayreuth) in Bavaria. Due to the respective local East Franconian German dialects, the adjacent northeastern region of Baden-Württemberg called Tauberfranken and parts of southern Thuringia are also considered as Franconian regions.
The two largest cities of Franconia are Nuremberg and Würzburg. The metropolitan area of Nuremberg is often qualified as the economic and cultural centre of Franconia.
