Emigration
From 1847 to 1857, almost 200,000 French people emigrated abroad. In 1857, 18,800 Frenchmen left the country, out of whom 1,937 were from Basses-Pyrénées, 1,863 were from the Seine department, 1,458 from Bouches-du-Rhône, 1,287 from Hautes-Pyrénées, 1,107 from Haut-Rhin, 915 from Pyrénées-Orientales, 936 from Haute-Garonne, 870 from Bas-Rhin, 694 from Gironde and 488 from Aude.
From 1821 to 1920, around 121,000 Basques and Bearnese people from Basses-Pyrénées emigrated to America—more than 108,000 from 1835 to 1901.
